Umu Salamata Jalloh –From Sierra Leone to Global Impact: Inspiring Africa’s Youth in STEM

Whereas some leaders chase success, others create pathways for generations to thrive. Umu Salamata Jalloh, a Sierra Leonean biomedical engineer, researcher, and youth empowerment advocate – belongs firmly to the second category. A proud member of the AL for Health Network, her story is one of resilience, scientific excellence, and a deep commitment to uplifting Africa’s youth, especially girls, to break barriers and lead in STEM and health innovation. 

From Sierra Leone to Global Scientific Frontiers 

Growing up in a low-income community in Sierra Leone, Umu Salamata faced the social and cultural barriers that often limit girls’ access to education and careers in science. Rather than allowing these constraints to define her, she transformed them into catalysts for growth. 

Her academic journey began at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana, followed by both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), where she studied as a MasterCard Foundation Scholar. Her time at ASU included impactful research in quantitative mapping of brain tissue oxygenation, setting the stage for her future contributions to biomedical science. 

Today, Umu is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Rowan University (USA), working under the mentorship of Dr. Sebastián L. Vega. Her doctoral research centers on designing innovative biomaterial approaches for bone regeneration, specifically: Photopolymerized hydrogels, peptide-functionalized scaffolds and advanced tissue repair strategies. 

Her work has already gained recognition, including: 3rd Place in the Graduate Student Poster Presentation at Rowan Research Day (2024), and Best Poster Presentation at the Penn Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders (PCMD) Symposium, University of Pennsylvania. She has also contributed to peer‑reviewed publications in journals such as Gels and the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, and has presented her findings at national scientific forums including the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and the PCMD Scientific Symposium. Through these achievements, Umu Salamata is not only advancing scientific knowledge but also amplifying Africa’s presence in global health innovation. 

Founding PEN: Creating Pathways for Girls in STEM 

In 2024, Umu Salamata founded the Potential Empowerment Network (PEN) – a nonprofit organization based in Sierra Leone dedicated to empowering marginalized youth, especially girls, through mentorship, educational access, and gender equity in STEM. 

As Founder and Program Coordinator, she has: Led school outreach programs targeting underserved communities, organized PEN’s first community outreach event in 2025, facilitated the donation of school materials to more than 20 secondary school students in Freetown and engaged youth in mentorship and STEM awareness initiatives. Her leadership in PEN reflects her belief that innovation and education must go hand‑in‑hand with social impact. 

Mentorship, Teaching, and Scientific Leadership 

Beyond her research, Umu is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists. She has served as a Teaching Assistant for courses in: Biomaterials, Controlled drug release, and Biomedical optics. She and has also mentored undergraduate and high school students, guiding them through hands‑on laboratory research and helping them chart their own academic paths. Her leadership demonstrates a rare blend of technical expertise and community-centered purpose.

Umu’s journey reflects the essence of impact leadership – using personal success as a platform to uplift others. Whether she is engineering next-generation biomaterials in the lab or advocating for girls’ education in Sierra Leone, her mission remains consistent: “to transform adversity into opportunity and to create lasting impact across communities and continents”.
