AL for Health
Africa shoulders 25% of the global disease burden, yet it is only served by 2% of the world’s healthcare workforce (UNDPI, 2017). It is estimated that fewer than 50% of Africans have access to modern health facilities (WHO, 2014). The situation is further aggravated by the fact that Africa’s healthcare sector is plagued by many inefficiencies, including poorly trained workers, lack of resources, and lack of a structured system to promote and accelerate improvements in the sector. AL for Health Network seeks to address this challenge by uniting key stakeholders to build a resilient healthcare ecosystem championing and advocating for the health and well-being of Africa’s population.

What we do
By upskilling young leaders in the field, providing opportunities for collaboration among system actors, and supporting health innovation and entrepreneurship, our network plays an active role in shaping the direction of healthcare on the continent to leverage systems change. Through the Network’s initiatives, we forge toward robust health systems surveillance, prevention, control, and response as well as quality healthcare that is patient-centered, affordable, and accessible. Increasing Access to Mental Health Tools for Youth Development | Obra Coulibaly
Description
Meet Obra Coulibaly (ALA, Class of 2016). She promotes youth mental health through private and group counselling and events through her organization SHVoices. She also provides mental health education to over 50 youth and parents through an annual mental health Camp (Mind Act Camp). Following her mission with SHVoices, Obra was awarded $18,000 in February 2023 by the Social Entrepreneurship Fund (SEF) by Mastercard ALA to kick start the construction of the SHVoices center. The center will be a mental health center in Ivory Coast dedicated to preventing mental health issues and care through cheap/free consultations, activities such as art therapy, sport & wellness activities, and support groups.
