The Africa Careers Network is proud to welcome 10 exceptional young professionals to Cohort 3 of the Umholi we Africa (UwA) Fellowship, a bold initiative by the African Leadership Academy (ALA) designed to address a critical gap in Africa’s development: the urgent need for ethical, youth-driven leadership in the public sector.
As governance challenges persist across the continent—from weak public institutions to rising citizen distrust—UwA is planting seeds of transformation by preparing and positioning the next generation of public sector leaders.

Launched as a response to the underrepresentation of youth in policy and governance roles, the UwA Fellowship is a two-year leadership program that places talented young Africans in Special Advisor roles within Ministerial offices and intergovernmental organizations. These placements give fellows unprecedented exposure to the policymaking process and the chance to contribute meaningfully to public administration, reform, and service delivery.
Cohort 3 represents the next wave of leaders who will shape Africa’s future from inside its institutions. Through their roles, these fellows will:
- Advise Ministers and public sector leaders on critical national priorities;
- Contribute to the design and implementation of policy;
- Gain hands-on experience navigating the complexities of governance; and
- Join a pan-African community committed to ethical and effective leadership.
Handpicked from a highly competitive pool of applicants across Africa, the 10 fellows of Cohort 3 bring with them diverse backgrounds in policy, law, economics, health, education, technology, and social innovation. What unites them is a shared passion for servant leadership, a commitment to ethical governance, and a drive to contribute to nation-building through public service.

Their work will take place in various ministerial offices and regional organizations where their ideas and leadership will influence real-world policy, resource allocation, and citizen impact.
At the heart of the Umholi we Africa Fellowship is the belief that Africa’s youth are not just the future of governance—they are essential to its present. With over 70% of the continent’s population under the age of 30, the lack of youth representation in government is a missed opportunity to harness innovation, digital fluency, and bold leadership.
UwA is intentionally bridging this gap by creating clear entry points into public service for young, high-potential Africans—supported by mentorship, experiential learning, and an ecosystem of peers and advisors.

With three cohorts now in motion, the Umholi we Africa Fellowship is steadily building a new cadre of leaders equipped to deliver ethical, people-centered governance. Alumni from previous cohorts have already contributed to:
- National digital strategies
- Gender and education reforms
- Economic policy development
- Climate adaptation plans
- Youth employment initiatives
These fellows are not just filling positions—they are reshaping systems and inspiring new levels of accountability and excellence in the public sector.
