
When Alaba Winny completed her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences at Makerere University, she never imagined stepping into a classroom as a teacher. Yet, her decision to join Teach For Uganda ignited a journey of purpose, leadership, and transformation. With no prior teaching background, she embraced the challenge head-on, proving that passion and adaptability can outshine experience.
Her fellowship began with an intensive one-month training that sharpened her classroom management and instructional skills. Although the first few weeks in the field were daunting, she approached each challenge as an opportunity to grow and develop. Through resilience and reflection, Alaba transformed uncertainty into competence, becoming a beacon of excellence in her placement school.
Her story exemplifies the transformative power of stepping beyond one’s comfort zone to drive meaningful change. Her willingness to learn, coupled with her strategic approach, reshaped how her student’s experienced education. In a short time, she earned admiration from peers, leaders, and learners alike.
Bringing Digital Learning to Rural Classrooms
Teaching in a rural primary school came with unique challenges, but Alaba viewed them as opportunities for innovation. One of her proudest milestones was introducing digital learning tools to a hard-to-reach community. When the Teach For Uganda CEO donated digital equipment, Alaba championed its integration into classroom activities.
This initiative revolutionized learning for her pupils, exposing them to new methods of engagement and knowledge acquisition. For many students, it was their first encounter with digital literacy, sparking excitement and curiosity. Alaba’s leadership ensured the technology became more than a novelty; it became a catalyst for academic growth.
The transformation was visible as students began to embrace interactive learning with enthusiasm. Alaba’s commitment bridged the gap between traditional teaching and modern innovation. Her impact extended beyond academics, planting seeds of digital empowerment in a community that had been overlooked.
Championing Climate Action Through Student Competitions
Alaba’s leadership extended beyond academics into environmental advocacy. She guided her school to participate in the prestigious Climate Dialogue Competition, a journey that tested teamwork, innovation, and resolve. Under her mentorship, the students advanced from local contests to the national stage.
Their triumph at the national level marked a defining achievement for the school and the community. Emerging as champions, they earned 3 million UGX and certificates of recognition. The victory not only celebrated the students’ brilliance but also highlighted Alaba’s ability to nurture confidence and critical thinking in young minds.
This success story reinforced the importance of holistic education that blends knowledge with social responsibility. Alaba’s influence cultivated a generation of learners who see themselves as active custodians of their environment. Her story underscores how dedicated educators can shape both intellect and character.Â
Evolving into a Leader in the Development Sector
Alaba’s excellence did not go unnoticed. Teach For Uganda recognized her as one of the program’s outstanding fellows, a distinction that affirmed her impact and growth. This recognition became a turning point, steering her career toward broader leadership in the development field.
After completing her two-year fellowship, Alaba transitioned to Crossroads International, where she partners with YIDA Youth Initiative, a refugee-led organization. As a Resource Mobilizer, she now focuses on grant writing and fundraising to expand educational and empowerment programs for refugees. Her new role reflects a seamless evolution from classroom leadership to global impact.
Today, Alaba continues to inspire through her unwavering commitment to service and transformation. Her journey exemplifies how education can foster leaders who shape systems and empower communities. Through vision and action, she has become a voice for equity, resilience, and opportunity.
