Where Hope Learns: The Birth of Jasper Primary School in Uganda

Eric Ayamba’s journey into education leadership began with a deep belief that education can transform the trajectory of entire communities. An alumnus of the United States International University–Africa, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance with a concentration in Economics as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, Eric has always viewed learning as a pathway toward dignity, equity, and long-term social change.

Driven by a passion for rural transformation, he co-founded Jasper Primary School in Uganda in 2025, creating a learning environment designed to be inclusive, innovative, and resilient. As a 2024 Little Bets Challenge winner and an ALforEducation coach, Eric continues to champion community-driven solutions that expand opportunity for children often left at the margins of traditional education systems.

When Education Becomes a Safe Place

Born during South Africa’s transition from apartheid to constitutional democracy, Eric grew up in Zwide township in Gqeberha, an environment shaped by decades of systemic inequality. Life in the township was defined by scarcity: zinc homes crowded together, shared water sources, limited infrastructure, and daily exposure to poverty and violence. Opportunity often felt distant, determined more by geography than potential.

School became a refuge. It was where curiosity was welcomed, where possibility replaced limitation, and where Eric first understood that education could offer more than knowledge; it could restore confidence and expand imagination. Watching his mother work tirelessly as a domestic worker to support the family reinforced a powerful lesson: education was not a privilege; it was survival, protection, and hope.

“I realized early that education gives children something poverty tries to take away, the belief that their future belongs to them,” Eric reflects.

That realization quietly shaped a lifelong commitment: one day, he would help create learning spaces where children felt seen, valued, and capable of dreaming beyond their circumstances.

Closing the Gap by Design

Years later, Eric’s professional journey brought him to education leadership roles, including serving as Head of Schools at Molo Mhlaba in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats of Cape Town, another township marked by resilience despite structural inequality. There, he witnessed firsthand the stark divide between well-resourced schools and those serving historically marginalized communities.

For Eric, the challenge was clear: educational inequality is not accidental; it is systemic. Addressing it requires intentional design rather than temporary intervention.

At Molo Mhlaba, this philosophy translated into a child-centred learning model grounded in Montessori principles and strengthened through STEAM education. Programmes like Girlpreneur empowered young girls to identify community challenges, develop entrepreneurial solutions, and pitch business ideas to real investors, transforming students from passive learners into problem-solvers and innovators.

“Education should not prepare children only to pass exams,” he explains. “It should prepare them to shape the world they live in.”

Designed as a community-rooted institution, the school seeks to redefine what quality education looks like in rural contexts, combining strong academic foundations with creativity, critical thinking, and local relevance.
