Ayomide Agbaje – Driving Health Equity and Sustainable Innovation Across Africa through Technology

Ayomide Agbaje is an academic researcher, and social entrepreneur, whose work builds solutions that transforms lives. He specialises in leveraging technology and data science to address critical challenges in healthcare access, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Africa. Ayomide reimagines systems entirely to work for those who have long been left behind.
His work is deeply informed by lived experience. Growing up in Nigeria, Ayomide witnessed firsthand the systemic inequalities facing communities where more than half the population lives in extreme poverty. These realities shaped his commitment to building solutions that are not only innovative, but accessible, inclusive, and scalable in low‑resource settings.
HealthDrive: Closing the Rural Healthcare Gap Through Technology
Since December 2023, Ayomide has served as Co‑Founder of HealthDrive, a USSD‑enabled telehealth platform designed to bridge healthcare access gaps in rural and underserved African communities. The initiative connects rural patients to medical care using basic feature phones.
At HealthDrive, Ayomide leads data analytics and technology strategy, ensuring that rural patients can connect to medical care without needing internet access or smartphones. In regions where smartphones and internet access remain scarce, HealthDrive offers a lifeline. By leveraging basic mobile technology, it removes one of the biggest barriers to care, proving that digital health innovation does not have to be exclusive to be impactful. To date, the platform has reached 50+ rural patients across two communities, proving that innovation can thrive even in low-resource settings. This initiative not only delivers care but also generates insights to inform better health policies and interventions.
From Research to Real-World Impact
Ayomide’s academic research sits at the intersection of digital health implementation, climate‑smart agriculture, and impact entrepreneurship in African low‑resource contexts. What sets his work apart is its dual grounding: rigorous academic inquiry paired with practical insights drawn from his entrepreneurial ventures. Through this approach, Ayomide contributes evidence‑based solutions that may inform policy, strengthen systems, and translate research into action for communities that need it most. He is preparing to present a co-authored paper on AI Applications for Climate-Smart Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa, bridging rigorous research with practical solutions drawn from his entrepreneurial ventures.
Ayomide’s commitment to equity extends well beyond his research and ventures. As Impact Officer for the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Kigali Hub, he led socio‑economic impact projects in partnership with organisations across the public, private, and civil society sectors. Previously, from May 2022 to February 2024, he served as a Development Policy Champion with the ONE Campaign in Nigeria. His advocacy efforts contributed to campaigns that mobilised over 50,000 petition signatures and helped drive a 30% increase in Global Fund pledges supporting the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Africa.
Global Recognition for Innovation and Leadership
Ayomide’s leadership and innovation have earned global recognition. In October 2024, he was named a Youth Climate Adaptation Innovator by the Global Centre on Adaptation, and in May 2024, he won the AllAfrica Media Innovation Challenge. He is also an active member of the UNLEASH global community for SDG innovators, where he has collaborated with 1,000+ changemakers from over 136 countries, contributing African‑led perspectives to global problem‑solving.
