Why Disability Inclusion Should Be Part of Every Organisation’s Talent Strategy

Africa’s workforce is changing. Organisations are looking for people with the skills to adapt to new technologies, solve complex problems, serve diverse customers, and contribute to growing economies. At the same time, many talented people continue to face limited access to employment opportunities. Persons with Disabilities are part of this talent pool, and organisations that overlook them may be overlooking skills, perspectives, and potential that could strengthen their teams.

Disability inclusion should therefore not sit separately from an organisation’s talent strategy. It should be considered alongside recruitment, employee development, succession planning, and retention.

The African Development Bank has highlighted the importance of creating productive employment opportunities for Africa’s growing youth population. Disability inclusion can form part of this broader effort to ensure that more young people can participate in the continent’s economic development.

Make Inclusion Part of the Employee Journey

A talent strategy should also ask what happens after someone is hired. Can employees access training and professional development? Are managers equipped to support different needs? Can employees take on leadership responsibilities? Are performance expectations clear and fairly assessed? Do employees with disabilities have the same opportunities to progress?

These questions shift disability inclusion from a recruitment activity to a long-term talent management practice.

An Accenture study of companies participating in the Disability Equality Index found that businesses identified as disability inclusion leaders reported stronger financial performance across several measures than their peers. While these results do not establish that disability inclusion alone causes better financial performance, they demonstrate the potential value of treating inclusion as part of business strategy rather than as a standalone initiative.
