For Melaku Abere, being an ACN Ambassador is not only about sharing opportunities but also about creating access, building meaningful connections, and ensuring that talented scholars are not held back by a lack of information, support, or opportunity. Through his commitment to inclusive leadership, he is helping create pathways that enable others to learn, grow, and thrive.

Coming from a rural background and experiencing the challenges that can limit access to education and growth opportunities, Melaku understands that talent exists in every community. However, opportunity does not always reach everyone equally. This understanding has shaped his commitment to becoming the kind of leader who helps others discover possibilities they may not have known existed.

As a Mastercard Foundation Scholar alumnus and Africa Career Networks (ACN) Ambassador, Melaku has dedicated himself to supporting fellow scholars by connecting them with opportunities that can shape their academic, professional, and personal journeys. For him, impact is not only sharing an opportunity but also helping someone believe they are capable of pursuing it.

A simple conversation, a referral, or guidance at the right moment can become the turning point in someone’s journey. This is the kind of impact Melaku hopes to create: helping scholars move from uncertainty to confidence, from potential to action, and from ambition to achievement.

Being part of the ACN Ambassador Program has strengthened his communication, networking, leadership, and community-building skills while learning how to intentionally connect scholars with opportunities that align with their aspirations. More importantly, the experience has shown him that leadership is about creating pathways for others and ensuring that every scholar has the confidence and support to pursue opportunities that can shape their future.

His commitment is further strengthened through the Africa Career Networks Ambassador Preparation Programme, where he gained deeper insights into intentional community building, effective communication, networking, and inclusive leadership. The onboarding experience reinforced that an ambassador’s role goes beyond promoting opportunities; it requires understanding people’s needs, encouraging participation, and creating an environment where every scholar feels valued.

Through this experience, Melaku has become equipped to serve as a connector between scholars and the resources, networks, and support systems available to help them succeed.

Moving forward, he is committed to reaching more scholars, encouraging greater engagement, and promoting a culture of inclusion. Drawing from his experiences in disability advocacy, leadership, and community engagement, he hopes to ensure that more young people have the confidence and support needed to pursue opportunities and create impact within their communities.
