Meet Morinola: The Artist Who Transforms Chaos into Canvas

Entering Morinola’s mind is like stepping into a colour bomb rife with unique ideas and brilliance-in-flux.

Be it in fashion design or art, the heart of her work is proudly perched on the beauty of maximalism. To Morinola, maximalism is her way of life. Sequins, oil paints, scraps of fabric or beads are a playground for a complex yet comprehensible piece of artwork.

“I love adding, subtracting, reusing, reducing, recycling, remixing… basically doing the most,” she says. “Working with all kinds of materials makes creating feel like play to me. I feel like I’m in a candy store of textures and possibilities.”

The Medium Is the Playground

What is Morinola’s creative process behind her vibrant pieces? Part intuition, part improv jam session.

“I don’t really pick based on message. I let the materials talk first, then I follow their lead. It’s not about tidiness or neat outcomes. It’s about letting chaos breathe. “Honestly? Most of the time, there’s absolutely nothing in my head when I’m creating, no grand concept, no chosen medium, nada. I just trust the process and let my hands figure it out as they go.”

Her piece, My Shoe, had no plan or blueprint. She just started, trusted herself and kept going. To this day, My Shoe is a reflection of her truest self: Morinola, the colourful and beautifully chaotic queen of Fashion and Design.

Instagram and Spontaneity Is the Muse, Actually

Most of us see Instagram scrolling as a guilty pleasure or a bad habit, but Morinola sees Instagram as her inspiration bank. She enjoys watching how other Artists layer paint and arrange colours. Right now, she’s obsessed with creators like Fisayo Longe.

“Instagram Reels!!! I’m a proud, chronic scroller — no shame. It’s where I go to fall back in love with the process, over and over again.”

Instagram is also her way of accountability in the face of every Creative’s common enemy: Procrastination. Her Art page, @mocasso_draws, keeps her creating and sharing her latest ideas.

“I can procrastinate for days, and then out of nowhere, at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday, I’ll crank out three new pieces. It’s that unpredictability I love.”

Footprints, Fashion, and Found Family

Morinola has stitched her vision into Footprints’ DNA. The long-standing Student Enterprise, which focuses on merchandising for the African Leadership Academy, has received a renewed and vibrant look at the graceful hands of Morinola, Head of Design and Creative Direction of Footprints.

Ask her about her leadership, and she says just one word: “UMUZI.” Translation? Footprints has become a home and community for her to expand her creative boundaries.

“Whether it’s a swish of Ankara print or the contour of a silhouette, I’m always dressing my characters, even if they’re not fully human.”

From Instagram to the Institute: The Road Ahead

Our Creative Chaos queen has just been accepted into the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Morinola is most excited about the freedom and empowerment that the best art school in the United States promises. She initially doubted herself, but just like her Art, she bravely immersed herself in it.

“I knew I had something special, but I wasn’t sure if the world would see it the way I do. So I shot my shot, aimed for the stars… and voilà, here I am!”

What does Morinola envision for herself? Morinola wants to group exhibitions and style experiments. She is not afraid of the chaos. That is what defines her Art the most. SAIC will be the next chapter in Morinola’s lifelong story of creating and expanding without boundaries.

Her Art is a reflection of herself: Morinola the stylist, maximalist, scroller and vibrant queen.

And honestly? That is where her magic shall live and grow.
