Celumusa Ndlangamandla – From the AL for Health Research Fellowship to Johns Hopkins: A Journey of Growth and Purpose

Celumusa C. Ndlangamandla — a dedicated mental health nurse from Eswatini, and PhD student at the John Hopkins School of Nursing. His journey reflects the transformative power of mentorship, research, and purpose‑driven leadership in shaping Africa’s health systems.
Celumusa’s leadership story is rooted in the AL for Health Research Fellowship, a program aimed at empowering emerging health leaders across Africa. For him, the fellowship was nothing short of transformative. It sharpened his research interests, built his confidence, and strengthened his ability to communicate the significance of his work. These skills that proved invaluable as he navigated competitive PhD admission processes.
“Reflecting on the ALA Health Fellowship, I realize just how transformative the experience was. It sharpened my research interests, strengthened my motivation, and gave me the confidence to clearly articulate the significance of my research. Looking back, the fellowship became invaluable for my preparation for PhD admission interviews” ~ Celumusa Ndlangamandla.
These efforts paid off. Today, Celumusa is pursuing his PhD at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, one of the world’s foremost institutions in nursing research and education. This milestone is not simply an academic achievement; it represents his long‑standing commitment to advancing evidence‑based practice and improving health outcomes for underserved communities across the continent.
A Strong Academic Foundation Rooted in Community Impact
Before joining Johns Hopkins, Celumusa built a robust academic and professional foundation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mental Health Nursing from the University of Eswatini (formerly the University of Swaziland) and a Master of Science in Community and Public Health Nursing from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. He articulates that this training shaped his core belief that mental health and public health are inseparable, especially in environments where vulnerability, stigma, and limited access to care intersect.
Championing Adolescent Mental Health and HIV Prevention
Celumusa’s research is guided by a clear and compassionate vision of creating equitable, youth‑centred interventions that address the dual burden of mental health challenges and HIV risk among adolescents. His work focuses particularly on hard‑to‑reach adolescents and young people, who often fall through the cracks of conventional health systems.
Driven by the lived experiences of youths who face overlapping vulnerabilities with minimal support, Celumusa aims to generate evidence that informs stronger mental health care access, innovative HIV prevention strategies, policy frameworks that acknowledge the realities of young people and integrated
models of care that address both psychological and clinical needs. By combining rigorous research with practical, community‑rooted insight, he is positioning himself as a leader who will shape the future of mental health and HIV care in Africa.
At the core of Celumusa’s work is a commitment to strengthening health systems so they are equitable, resilient and responsive to vulnerable populations.
A Leader Guided by Purpose
Celumusa embodies what the AL for Health Network stands for: leaders who combine technical expertise, strategic insight, and a deep commitment to community service. His journey from the AL for Health fellowship to doctoral studies at Johns Hopkins, is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when opportunity meets determination.
We proudly celebrate Celumusa Ndlangamandla for his vision, resilience, and dedication to strengthening health systems, so they are equitable, resilient and responsive to vulnerable populations.
