And often, rightly so. The politicians allegedly embezzle funds meant for development. However, one side of the equation is missing. If a government serves the people and represents those it serves, doesn’t the people’s failure to hold it accountable make them equally guilty?

Surely if power belongs to the people, why do the people then shift blame when it comes to being accountable? Our defence is often that we don’t know how. So then how do we throw rocks at a system we have not sufficiently studied? How do we demand accountability from institutions whose histories, structures, and incentives we barely understand? How do we dismantle systems we have never taken the time to comprehend? As Paulo Freire argues in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, education should not merely reproduce the systems that oppress us; it should equip us with the critical consciousness to question them, challenge them, and imagine alternatives. Education becomes liberatory when it teaches us not just how to live in the world as it is, but how to transform it.

Surely, by virtue of Mandela saying, “Education is the only tool we can use to change the world,” Africa should have changed by now. It is a provocative statement, perhaps unfair in its generalisation, but one that forces us to confront an uncomfortable question: what happens to a continent when the pursuit of knowledge becomes an afterthought? Mandela must not have meant a university degree; he must have meant the ability to cultivate the freedom to think critically, question inherited assumptions, and live a life defined by one’s own convictions rather than society’s expectations. Changing the systems that shape our thinking also requires us to take personal responsibility for what we read, the questions we ask, and our willingness to challenge what we have always been taught to believe.

The Knowledge on how to change Africa is not lacking; Consider the literature available to us. In Dead Aid, Dambisa Moyo challenges conventional approaches to foreign aid and ask difficult questions about Africa’s economic development- a blueprint on how aid works and the question of how to survive without it. Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa traces the historical structures of exploitation that shaped the continent’s economic condition, an answer to neocolonialism. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Decolonising the Mind examines the relationship between language, culture, and intellectual liberation, an answer to mental colonization, while Chinua Achebe’s The Trouble with Nigeria interrogates the leadership failures that continue to undermine national progress. Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth forces us to confront the complexities of liberation and the responsibilities that follow independence. The list is long, evidence enough that the tools for change are available.

The decline of intellectualism is deliberate and intentional, perhaps why they say if you want to hide something from an African, hide it in a book. This looks like demanding revolutions without studying what makes them possible. We seem to have too many opinionated minds but very few critically read minds. A population that cannot interrogate information is vulnerable to manipulation, and citizens who cannot distinguish propaganda from evidence struggle to hold leaders accountable. The challenges we face are rarely confined to a single discipline. Corruption is not merely a financial problem; it is also a question of governance, ethics, political incentives, institutional accountability, and public culture. Similarly, healthcare crises are not simply medical problems; they are shaped by public policy, infrastructure, financing, inequality, education, and the distribution of power. All interconnected.

This is why the disciplines we pursue, however valuable, cannot exist in isolation from the broader systems in which their knowledge is applied. Solving complex problems requires us to look beyond the boundaries of our own expertise, understand how different systems interact, and draw on knowledge from other fields. The answer to development at the core is in a well-informed citizenry. Because leadership is not simply about having the courage to challenge a system; it is about having the knowledge to understand what needs changing and the wisdom to know how. If we want to lead Africa differently, we must first learn to think differently. And that is Readership for Leadership.

Sarabel Odero is a governance and public policy practitioner.
