Meet Johnson Thomson Daniel the co-founder of MedPack Tanzania Limited

Johnson Thomson Daniel is a Tanzanian-born entrepreneur and public health advocate. He is an African Leadership Academy graduate and a Medpack Tanzania Limited co-founder. This health tech startup aims to digitize the pharmaceutical supply chain and facilitate healthcare delivery directly to people’s doorsteps.

Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, yet it remains a major challenge in many parts of Africa. One of the significant challenges facing the healthcare sector in Africa is the lack of reliable pharmaceutical supply chains. This results in a shortage of essential medicines, particularly for patients who live in rural or remote areas. However, innovative solutions like MedPack Tanzania Limited are working to change this and improve the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services across the continent.

Co-founded by Johnson Thomson Daniel, a graduate of the African Leadership Academy class of 2021,  MedPack Tanzania Limited is an online pharmacy platform that facilitates the delivery of medicine and healthcare products directly to people’s doorsteps. The platform is designed to provide access to essential medicines and healthcare products to individuals who may not have access to traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies. With over 1500 people currently using the platform to access their healthcare needs, MedPack is significantly impacting the health sector in Tanzania.

According to a report by the World Health Organization, up to 43% of patients in some African countries have to visit multiple pharmacies to obtain all the medicines they need. This can result in delays in receiving treatment and increased costs associated with travel, particularly for patients who live in rural or remote areas. In addition, pharmacies may lose customers if they don’t have the medicines that patients need. Many pharmacies in Africa also face significant challenges in restocking their inventory, which can result in lost revenue and reduced profitability.

By digitizing the pharmaceutical supply chain and providing an online pharmacy platform, MedPack is helping to address these challenges. By making it easier for patients to access the medicines they need and for pharmacies to restock their inventory, MedPack is improving the efficiency and accessibility of healthcare services in Tanzania and beyond. The platform works with 187 pharmacies to restock their medication, providing a reliable supply chain for essential medicines. This way, MedPack can ensure everyone has access to the essential medications they need, regardless of location.

Despite the potential for the pharmaceutical sector in Africa, one of the major challenges facing startups like MedPack is funding. While the African pharmaceutical market is projected to reach $45 billion by 2028, many startups struggle to secure the investment they need to scale their services across the continent.

This is where stakeholders and different investors can play a crucial role. By investing in startups like MedPack, they can help to revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered in Africa, ultimately improving the health outcomes for millions of people across the continent. With continued investment in the sector and innovative solutions like MedPack, we can ensure that everyone in Africa has access to essential medicines and healthcare products they need.

Medpack Tanzania Limited has been recognized for its innovative approach to healthcare delivery. The startup was the first from Tanzania to be in the African Impact Challenge 2022 to 2023 hosted by the University of Toronto and where they won the Best Youth-led Startup of the Year award in 2022. This recognition is a testament to MedPack’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to all. Their slogan, PharmacyKiganjani, which means pharmacy in the palm of your hands, highlights the convenience and accessibility that the platform provides.

In conclusion, the future looks bright for the pharmaceutical sector in Africa. With innovative solutions like MedPack Tanzania Limited and continued investment in the sector, we can ensure that everyone in Africa has access to essential medicines and healthcare products, ultimately improving the health outcomes for millions of people across the continent. Let us all join hands and support innovative healthcare startups like MedPack to achieve this goal.
