Africa\u2019s workforce is changing. Organisations are looking for people with the skills to adapt to new technologies, solve complex problems, serve diverse customers, and contribute to growing economies. At the same time, many talented people continue to face limited access to employment opportunities. Persons with Disabilities are part of this talent pool, and organisations that overlook them may be overlooking skills, perspectives, and potential that could strengthen their teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disability inclusion should therefore not sit separately from an organisation\u2019s talent strategy. It should be considered alongside recruitment, employee development, succession planning, and retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think Beyond Recruitment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Talent strategy is not simply about filling vacancies. It is about understanding what skills an organisation will need, where those skills can be found, and how people can be developed to meet future organisational needs. This creates an opportunity for organisations to rethink how they identify talent. Instead of relying solely on traditional recruitment channels or assumptions about the types of roles Persons with Disabilities can perform, employers can actively connect with disability organisations, universities, career networks, and skills development programmes to reach a wider pool of candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly relevant in Africa, where young people make up a significant proportion of the population and where countries are working to expand access to skills, decent work, and economic opportunities. The African Development Bank has highlighted the importance of creating productive employment opportunities for Africa’s growing youth population. Disability inclusion can form part of this broader effort to ensure that more young people can participate in the continent’s economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make Inclusion Part of the Employee Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n

A talent strategy should also ask what happens after someone is hired. Can employees access training and professional development? Are managers equipped to support different needs? Can employees take on leadership responsibilities? Are performance expectations clear and fairly assessed? Do employees with disabilities have the same opportunities to progress?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions shift disability inclusion from a recruitment activity to a long-term talent management practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Accenture study<\/a> of companies participating in the Disability Equality Index found that businesses identified as disability inclusion leaders reported stronger financial performance across several measures than their peers. While these results do not establish that disability inclusion alone causes better financial performance, they demonstrate the potential value of treating inclusion as part of business strategy rather than as a standalone initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ACN Guide to Employing Persons with Disabilities<\/a> similarly provides practical guidance for organisations seeking to create more inclusive employment practices, from recruitment through to workplace participation and development. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build the Workforce You Want for the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For African organisations, the question is not only how to hire the right people today, but how to build workforces that are representative, adaptable, and prepared for tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disability inclusion can contribute to that goal by encouraging organisations to look more broadly at talent and reconsider how potential is identified and developed. It also encourages leaders to examine whether their systems are enabling employees to contribute fully once they join the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A strong talent strategy should make room for different experiences, abilities, and perspectives.
