When creativity meets purpose, something powerful happens. That was the spirit of UMUZI 2026, a vibrant celebration of culture, imagination, and artistic expression hosted at African Leadership Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cSankofa \u2013 A New Genesis,\u201d invited participants to look back at African heritage while boldly reimagining the future. In partnership with ALA\u2019s Creative Arts team, Africa Career Networks (ACN), through AL for the Arts, curated a dynamic experience that showcased not only talent, but the real career potential of the creative industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, seven creatives from the AL for the Arts and Mastercard Foundation community returned to campus to participate in UMUZI, demonstrating what sustainable, future-facing careers in the arts truly look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sankofa \u2013 A New Genesis: Honouring the Past, Building the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMUZI 2026 brought this to life through Afrofuturist fashion, dance, film, dialogue, and immersive workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants stepped into roles as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runway models showcasing bold creative expression<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fashion designers reimagining African heritage<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workshop facilitators leading conversations on art, technology, storytelling, and creative entrepreneurship<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performers and choreographers shaping the festival\u2019s energy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A defining feature of UMUZI 2026 was the active participation of ALA alumni and Mastercard Foundation fellows who are building real careers in the creative sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saiffedine showcased a powerful short film, delivered a compelling TEDx Talk, and ran a hands-on screenwriting workshop. His presence demonstrated the full creative pipeline \u2014 from storytelling to public speaking to skills development. His post-screening Q&A was thoughtfully facilitated by Nonkululeko Matiwane, creating space for reflection and dialogue on narrative craft and impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalia led a contemporary dance workshop that invited participants to explore emotion, movement, and identity through physical expression, highlighting dance as both art and career pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keabetswe facilitated an African dance workshop and served as the dance coach for the opening ceremony, setting the tone for the festival with rhythm, energy, and cultural grounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc57 Rutendo Kusano (ALA Alumni)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rutendo showcased her fashion line during the opening ceremony, embodying the Afrofuturist theme by blending heritage with modern design. Her work illustrated how fashion can be both artistic expression and entrepreneurial venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udfa8 Nicolle Marizani (Mastercard Foundation Scholar)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicolle led a thought-provoking workshop on the \u201ccurrency of art,\u201d unpacking how creative work holds social, cultural, and financial value. Participants explored how artists can think strategically about monetisation and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adelard facilitated a session on \u201cAI in the Creative Space,\u201d examining how emerging technologies are reshaping design, storytelling, music production, and visual art. His workshop positioned creativity at the intersection of innovation and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
