Samuel Binja is a refugee, education entrepreneur, and social impact leader based in Kakuma, Kenya. He is the founder of Light Academy and the Kalobeyei Initiative for Better Life (KI4BLI). Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Binja has dedicated his life to using education as a tool for protection, empowerment, and transformation. Through his innovative Light Instructional Framework for Excellence (LIFE Model), he strengthens teaching quality while empowering parents as co-educators, creating lasting improvements in learning outcomes for refugee children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2017, Binja\u2019s life changed. Forced to flee conflict in Congo, he crossed dense forests and harsh terrains, eventually arriving in the semi-desert of Turkana, Kenya. He arrived with nothing, no family, no home, no possessions, and faced a world where survival required resilience, courage, and purpose. In this uncertainty, he discovered his one remaining lifeline: education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Education became more than learning; it became his anchor and his way forward. For Binja, it was a source of meaning, protection, and hope at a time when everything else had been stripped away. That belief shaped his mission: to ensure that displacement does not define a child\u2019s future, and that access to quality education becomes a reality even in the most fragile contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Binja witnessed the challenges refugee children face daily. In Kakuma and Kalobeyei settlements, classrooms are overcrowded, learning materials scarce, and teachers often undertrained or demotivated. Parents, struggling with poverty and trauma, are unable to fully engage in their children\u2019s education. Many learners leave school without basic literacy or numeracy, and without intervention, high dropout rates, early pregnancies, and limited future opportunities loom for an entire generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Determined to change this, Binja founded Light Academy<\/strong>, a community-centred school that currently serves over 350 children through a partial-scholarship model. From the beginning, he sought to design a system, not just a school, one that equips teachers, empowers parents, and holistically nurtures children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To bring this vision to life, Samuel developed the LIFE Model<\/strong>, which equips teachers with modern, practical pedagogy while positioning parents as co-educators. Parents are trained with practical tools to support learning at home and in school. Over time, 15 teachers and 30 parents have been trained, creating a network of informed and engaged community members who actively support children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The journey has not been without challenges. To maintain high quality, classes are capped at 50 learners, leaving many children waiting for access. Teachers face heavy workloads, limited incentives, and staffing shortages. Many parents struggle to contribute the required 40% toward education costs due to extreme poverty, and humanitarian aid changes have left some families even more vulnerable. At Light Academy, 40% of learners rely on school meals because food insecurity at home is widespread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite these obstacles, the impact is undeniable. Parents who are empowered become active partners in learning, teachers adopt innovative and locally sourced materials, and children thrive in safer, more engaging classrooms. Costs for materials have dropped by 60%, while learning engagement has improved, demonstrating that education can succeed even in fragile environments when the system is designed intentionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reflecting on his journey, Binja says, \u201cEducation saved my life.
